West Africa's coups

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, Ghanaian president and ECOWAS chair, faces a formidable in-tray. Of the 15 ECOWAS member states, three have had coups and two have had attempted coups within the last two years. The causal factors in these five countries include levels of internal conflict and institutional weakness that stand out against neighbours in the subregion. Nevertheless, the supply chain, economic and strategic implications extend further afield.
